My first little Kyoto travel story is about Genko-an, a peaceful temple that left a lasting impression on me.
Genko-an is best known for its beautiful round window, often called the “Window of Enlightenment.” As I stood in front of it, I finally understood why so many people talk about it. The view beyond the window looked less like a garden and more like a perfectly composed painting. The changing light, the trees, and the peaceful atmosphere all came together to create a scene that felt almost unreal.

It is one of those places where you naturally want to slow down, take a deep breath, and simply enjoy the moment. No photograph could fully capture how beautiful it felt in person.
The temple is also home to the famous “Bloody Ceiling.” According to history, the wooden boards were once part of the floor of Fushimi Castle, where samurai made their final stand. The boards were later preserved and installed in the temple ceiling as a memorial to those who lost their lives. Looking up at the ceiling while knowing its history adds a quiet sense of reflection to the visit.
What I loved most about Genko-an was the contrast between its peaceful beauty and its connection to history. It is a place that encourages you to appreciate both the present moment and the stories that have shaped the past.
If you’re planning a trip to Kyoto and would like to experience somewhere calm, beautiful, and meaningful, I highly recommend adding Genko-an to your itinerary. It was a wonderful way to begin my little Kyoto journey, and I can’t wait to share the next stop with you. 🍃
