If you ever have the chance to visit Japan in autumn, one event you shouldn’t miss is the Danjiri Festival.
A danjiri is a beautifully handcrafted wooden festival float, decorated with incredible carvings that showcase traditional Japanese craftsmanship. During the festival, teams of local people pull these massive floats through the streets at surprising speed. Watching them make sharp turns around corners is one of the most thrilling parts of the celebration!
One of the most famous Danjiri Festivals is held in Kishiwada, Osaka, where the event attracts visitors from all over Japan and around the world. The passion and teamwork of the participants are amazing to witness, and you can really feel how important this tradition is to the local people.
Last year, I actually came across a Danjiri Festival completely by chance. I wasn’t planning to see it at all, but suddenly I heard the sound of drums and cheering, and before I knew it, a danjiri was racing down the street. The energy was incredible, and seeing such a huge float moving so fast was truly breathtaking.
I also loved seeing so many children taking part in the festival. It was wonderful to watch people of all ages coming together to keep this tradition alive, and the whole town was filled with smiles and excitement.
Even though I only saw a small part of it, it left a big impression on me. This year, instead of just happening to come across it, I’d love to go and experience the festival properly from beginning to end.
Japanese festivals have such a unique atmosphere that you can’t fully understand until you experience one yourself. The lively crowds, delicious festival food, and strong sense of community make them truly unforgettable.
