One of the highlights of my Kyoto trip was finally getting to try aburi mochi, a traditional Kyoto sweet that has been loved for centuries.

Aburi mochi is made from small rice cakes that are skewered on bamboo sticks, lightly grilled over charcoal, and then coated in a sweet white miso sauce. It’s a simple treat, but the combination of the lightly toasted mochi and the rich, slightly savory miso glaze is incredibly comforting and uniquely Kyoto.
When my order arrived, I was surprised because one serving came with about ten little skewers. At first I thought, “Wow, that’s more than I expected!” But each piece was so light and delicately grilled that I couldn’t stop reaching for the next one. Before I knew it, I had finished them all!
It was such a delicious experience, and I’m so glad I got to try one of Kyoto’s most iconic traditional sweets. If you ever visit Kyoto, I definitely recommend giving aburi mochi a try. ✨
